These Easy New York Style Bagels are so insanely delicious with the perfect chewy texture in every bite. They don’t require a lot of prep time and will make your entire house smell amazing! I’m obsessed with eating these in the mornings with cream cheese, a slice of tomato and a fried egg -I mean how can your day not go well after a breakfast like that?
The Texture of these is just delightful. Soft and chewy on the inside and perfectly crispy on the outside. The Ingredients for this recipe are simple and the toppings can be customized. I used what I had on hand which was minced onions, Flaky sea salt and Cheddar cheese but you could also try everything but the bagel seasoning, cinnamon sugar or minced garlic!

Tips & Tricks
Boiling the bagels before baking makes these bagels so chewy and delicious!
Add an egg wash to add even more crispy goodness to the exterior of the bagel.
Don’t over-knead your dough, You want it smooth and elastic but not tough. The sweet spot is 5-7 minutes in my kitchen aid but it may differ for your mixer so make sure to keep an eye on the dough as you knead it!
Alternate between the lower and upper rack of your oven. Just switch the pan from the bottom rack to the top halfway through the baking time. This makes for evenly baked bagels without over crisping the toppings.

Ingredients
Flour: You can use bread flour for even fluffier results. I just used my trusty all purpose organic flour that I get from Costco
Milk: I used Whole Milk. You can also replace the milk with water if you are dairy intolerant.
Water:
Salt: I like to use redmond real salt
Yeast: I use dry instant yeast.
Sugar: I like to use a raw cane sugar.
Egg Wash: This is optional but I recommend not skipping!
Toppings: You can get creative with this part! A few ideas are minced garlic, minced onions, poppy seeds, cinnamon sugar, everything but the bagel or course salt!

The Process
Step One – To make these New York Style Bagels first heat the milk and water in a small saucepan until just starting to simmer, 105-110 degrees then add the sugar and yeast, mix well and let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
Whisk together 3 cups of flour (save the remaining 1/2 cup for later) and the salt in the bowl of your kitchen aid mixer. If doing by hand you can use a large mixing bowl.
Step Two – Make a well in the center of the flour and pour in the yeast mixture. Knead on medium speed for 3-5 minutes. You want the dough to be soft and pliable but not stiff. If its too sticky you can add the remaining flour a tablespoon at a time till the dough feels right.
If mixing by hand you will need to knead for 7-10 minutes.
Cover the dough with plastic wrap or a wet towel and let sit in a warm place for one hour until dough is doubled in size.
Step Three – Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Fill a large pot with water and place on the stove. While water heats punch down the dough and separate into eight equal pieces. Shape into smooth balls and flatten on the counter, then poke your finger through the center and stretch the hole working the bagel around until hole is roughly 1.5″-2″ in diameter, flatten on the counter with your palm.
Cover and let sit for 10 minutes while the water heats and then drop into the boiling water. Let it sit for one minute and then flip and let sit for one more minute before removing, the longer it boils the chewier your bagel will be.
Take an egg and separate the egg yolk from the white and beat the white and then brush over the top of the bagels. Add whatever toppings you would like and then pop in the oven for 20-25 minutes.
Remove from pan and let cool. Enjoy!
